Why nitrile rather than latex, and what does powder-free mean?

1 min read

In short

Nitrile lacks natural rubber latex proteins and is frequently an alternative. Powder-free latex gloves are not universally prohibited. Powdered natural-latex gloves must not be used in the relevant German occupational and school contexts because of increased allergy risk. No material suits every chemical automatically.

Choose gloves: Material is not enough; Check specific resistance; Correct fit; powder-free.

Latex proteins

They can trigger allergy in sensitised individuals. Powder can carry proteins into surrounding air, affecting more than the wearer. Avoiding latex may therefore be appropriate for allergy control or known allergy, but not all latex gloves are powdered.

Powder-free

Powder historically helped donning and prevented sticking. Powder-free products omit this added powder treatment and may use other surface processes. The term does not mean sterile, allergy-free or chemically resistant.

Nitrile and vinyl

Nitrile gloves usually use synthetic nitrile-butadiene rubber. Formulation, wall thickness and manufacture affect performance. Vinyl commonly uses plasticised PVC and is generally less elastic than suitable nitrile or latex. Selection follows the actual use.

Synthetic gloves can also contain sensitising additives. “Accelerator-free” describes a particular feature, not a guarantee nobody will react.

Historical background in Germany

Prevention intensified in the 1990s. DGUV describes the 1997/1998 latex campaign and the 1998 TRGS 540 requirement to replace powdered natural-latex gloves. This is not a prohibition of all latex since 1998. Current rules and manufacturer information govern today's choice.

Questions

Can I choose by colour?
No. Colour may organise work but replaces no performance data.
What about itching or redness?
Inform the responsible person and seek appropriate assessment. Do not try to “get used to it” through longer wear.
