Instrument materials: why can stainless steel corrode?
In short
Many dissecting instruments use stainless steel. Its corrosion resistance depends on a protective surface layer. Unsuitable chemicals, residue, moisture and poor care can still cause discolouration or corrosion.

Contents
Stainless steel is not one alloy
Different instruments require different hardness, toughness, elasticity and corrosion resistance. Cutting components and springing components may use different grades. “Stainless steel” alone does not establish an alloy number or suitability for surgery.
Scissors and fixed cutting edges may use hardenable steels. Other parts are selected for different needs. Magnetism is therefore not a reliable quality test: alloy and processing affect it, and attraction does not prove poor quality or counterfeiting.
Chlorides and inappropriate cleaners
Some residues attack surfaces. Excess cleaner does not indefinitely improve cleaning and can cause damage. Follow appropriate products, concentrations, rinsing and drying requirements. A single soaking recommendation for every instrument is unsuitable.
Deposited surface rust and damage to the underlying metal can look similar to an inexperienced user. Have rust, rough areas or pitting checked. Do not hide the problem by sanding with coarse abrasive paper.
Handles, coatings and cases matter
Wood, plastics, carbide inserts, coatings and adhesives may be part of the product. Reprocessing suitability concerns the entire construction. Heat-resistant metal does not establish the suitability of a handle, adhesive or case.
Read about care and cases. Manufacturer reprocessing documents provide technical context, not automatic approval of Studibedarf products.
Questions
- Is carbon steel inferior?
- Not inherently. It can suit particular edges but requires appropriate care.
- Is every mark rust?
- No; water marks and other deposits are possible. Changes in surface or function merit assessment.
- Can all stainless instruments be autoclaved?
- No. Manufacturer approval and an appropriate process are required for the complete item.
